INVESTING IN CAREER GUIDANCE – INTERNATIONAL AND EUROPEAN AGENCIES JOIN FORCES

JOINT STATEMENT OF OECD, ILO, UNESCO,
THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION AND ITS AGENCIES ETF AND CEDEFOP

Four international organisations, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the European Commission, and two agencies (European Training Foundation (ETF) and the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP) of one of these (European Commission) have issued a first joint statement encouraging governments to invest in career guidance.

The 12-page document describes career guidance, its importance for young people and adults in the present economic and work climate, the value of effective career guidance, the importance of employer engagement, some salient facts about career guidance provision, and a list of international resources that governments can draw on to help them to develop effective policies.

As the UK lead expert within ‘CareersNet’, led by CEDEFOP and having attended the ICCDPP International Conference in Norway 2019 (as part of the Scotland team) it’s great to see the importance of career guidance being profiled by the above-mentioned major European and international organisations. At present, I’m in the process of updating the four home nations CareersNet overview evidence-based papers on behalf of CEDEFOP.
