Mental toughness, health and wellbeing

Session Content

Dr Reinekke Lengelle will speak about personal development, resilience in the context of loss and grief, and how writing can facilitate this learning. To be healthily connected to ourselves via an internal dialogue that is both cognitively sound and affectively satisfying is the foundation of resilience in tough times. The paradox is “mental toughness” is not about being tough, it’s about being in touch. Don’t power through, but rather, how do you empower yourself with clarity and compassion.

Jenn Tardy, Career Coach and Diversity Recruiting Trainer will guide the audience through ‘the hiring obstacle course’ often experienced by minoritized individuals in search of a new career. Her goal is to bring awareness to the internal and external struggles faced by job seekers when they are underrepresented in the workplace. In addition, she will share strategies for professionals seeking ways to best support their clients with similar experiences.

Liane Hambly will present ‘Mental toughness for softies’. Many of us don’t identify as mentally tough. What if we are more of an anxious worrier than a confident optimist? A starting point is to recognise the resources that you already possess – the stamina to survive, the desire to learn and grow, the search for meaning in work, the ability to connect with others. Maybe you’re tougher than you think.
